Great Tips For Starting A Mom Blog And Why I Started One

I finally decided to start my own blog and I am excited to share some great tips to help with starting and improving a new mom blog!

I have been considering blogging for about a year, but I was too scared, nervous, and frankly, a little overwhelmed by the process. There is so much to know and do!

I finally decided to bite the bullet and try it. The worst that can happen, is I am out about $80 and some time. So, I vow to try my best and share some tips to help you along the way… both with blogging and parenting! They are both quite the journey.

I am hoping this post gives you inspiration to start your own blog. And I also want you to know that those feelings of being unsure of yourself, nervous, overwhelmed, etc. are very normal.

I have been a mom for a little over 7 years now. My kids are my pride and joy, but parenting comes with many challenges along the way. The challenges help us to grow both as individuals and as moms. It’s an amazing journey, but it is important to have a tribe and helpers along the way. Those “helpers” can come in many forms. I am hopeful I can be one of those “helpers” to other moms.

If you are considering blogging… like I was… my advice is, you need to just do it!

Take a leap of faith and go for it!

It is a great learning experience, and I have learned so much already. I do plan to eventually write a post on exactly how I started things, but that’s a post for the future. The more knowledge you have about blogging, the better, but there is so much information out there that it can be overwhelming.

The whole process can be overwhelming, but if you keep trying and keep working on one thing at a time, I believe you can do it! Once I started blogging, I tried to pick 1 thing to work on per day. That helped to break things into more manageable things. It also helped me to get a good understanding of the different pieces of blogging.

I have enjoyed this process so far, but I have had mixed emotions at times. I sometimes question myself and my abilities, and I wonder if I can do this. I question if anyone will read my content and if it will be helpful to someone or anyone really.

I think having some self doubts when you are starting something totally new is normal. I think that is what drives us to keep getting better, creating new content, and editing old content.

There are a few tips for starting a mom blog I would like to share with fellow moms just starting out:

  • This was my very first post and I’ve already edited it 6 times. Don’t be afraid to go back and edit posts. No one is perfect and I think we can learn from our mistakes.

  • Create goals and break things into manageable tasks. There are SO many things to learn about blogging. It takes time and patience.
    • Get a planner or a notebook to track goals, ideas, give yourself deadlines, etc.
    • Basically create a plan and goals to help you succeed.

  • Don’t compare yourself to others! Everyone is at a different point in their journey.
    • And long with that, everyone is at a different point in their life… you can’t compare yourself to a new blogger that dedicates 20 hours a week to their blog if you only have time for 5 hours a week.
    • The point is, everyone is different. Don’t compare yourself to others, but do learn from others experiences.

  • Reach out to fellow bloggers for help, feedback, tips and tricks, etc.
    • The blogging community is very willing to help others. Don’t be afraid to reach out.
    • Also know that bloggers are busy. So don’t stress if it takes a bit for someone to return your message.

  • Take time to learn SEO, Pinterest, and Tailwind.
    • Seriously look into Tailwind! I didn’t even know what it was before I started blogging.
    • I have been able to reach out to fellow bloggers this way (with Tailwind communities), have grown my followers, and improved my Pinterest engagement with scheduled pins.
    • They do have a free plan and I would start there to see if you like it and if it helps you… but I guarantee you will be hooked after that!

  • Research other tools that will help you along your journey.
    • Most tools have some sort of free plan and that is where I started (and still am with most tools).
    • You could spend an endless amount of money on blogging tools if you want to. Start with the free plans and see which ones you need to upgrade as you go.
    • I use Grammarly, Semrush, and Google Analytics to help improve by writing and blogging.

  • There is a lot of research and learning that goes into blogging.
    • Make a list of all the things you want to learn and start with one thing on that list and work your way down.
    • Listen to Podcasts! I like to read, but I don’t always have time to sit and read. So, I listened to podcasts to help me learn without taking up extra time. I like to listen to podcasts when I am driving, running, and cleaning. I can learn without taking extra time.

  • Keep going and don’t give up hope! Somedays you will wonder if you know what you are doing, but just keep working at it! It gets easier and better.
    • Someone once told me to never quit on a bad day and I thought that was great advice!
    • One of the podcasts I was listening to said to stick with blogging for a full year (trying to work on your blog for 5-10 hours a week for the whole year) before deciding to quit.
      • On challenging days, I remind myself that I committed to sticking with blogging for a full year. And I keep moving forward.
      • The longer you are blogging, the better the self-doubt gets.

So keep on keeping on my friends!

Anyways, I am excited to share information and tips I have learned along the way. I am not an expert in any of this, but I try my best, work hard, and have some fun… that’s all any of us can do, right?!

I am hoping these tips for starting a mom blog can help someone along their journey.
